Osteoarthritis (OA) the second most common rheumatological problem and it is the most frequent joint disease with a prevalence of 22% to 39% in India. The physical disability arising from pain and loss of functional capacity reduces quality of life and increases the risk of further morbidity.
Medical management of OA includes weight reduction, physiotherapy, and pharmacotherapy. These have only modest benefits and aim at reducing pain, improving joint mobility and quality of life. Surgical intervention in the form of replacement surgeries are usually the last resort.
The first line treatment in early stages includes weight reduction, use of ambulatory aids, intra-articular steroid injections and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Abuse of NSAIDs is common and can cause gastrointestinal toxicity in 50% of the users, while 5.4% develop a more serious event like cardiovascular diseases requiring hospitalization.
